What is the difference between Hypertrophy and Hyperplasia?
In the context of exercise, you often hear talk of hypertrophy training. What you then want is to increase muscle mass, not in the number of muscle cells but the size of the muscle cells.
Hypertrophy is when an organ or tissue has become larger than normal (each individual cell becomes larger, not the number of cells). The term can be used for any enlargement of an organ regardless of the cause.
The opposite of Hypertrophy is Atrophy, the cells become smaller, not in number but in volume.
Hyperplasia, on the other hand, is when you get more cells. If you gain a lot of fat, for example, you will get a cell division and thus more cells.
